Pavement Ants are the ones you see building small dirt mounds in sidewalk cracks, driveways, and along foundations. They’re especially common in Meridian neighborhoods with newer concrete and hardscaping. While they mostly nest outdoors, they’ll forage inside your home when temperatures spike. We see heavy pavement ant activity in South Meridian developments around Ten Mile Road and the Linder Village area, where construction has disturbed a lot of soil over the past few years.
Carpenter Ants are the species you really don’t want to ignore. Unlike other ants, carpenter ants tunnel into wood to build their nests. They don’t eat the wood — they excavate it — but over time the structural damage can be serious and expensive to repair. Carpenter ants prefer damp or decaying wood, so homes with moisture issues in crawl spaces, around window frames, or near leaky plumbing are at higher risk. Sugar Ants is a catch-all term most people use for any small ant trailing through the kitchen. In Meridian, these are usually odorous house ants or occasionally pharaoh ants. They’re drawn to spills, crumbs, pet food, and anything sweet. Once a trail is established, the colony sends more and more workers along the same path.
Meridian’s ant problem comes down to three things: irrigation, new construction, and the climate cycle.
The city’s extensive irrigation system keeps soil moist throughout the growing season, which is ideal for ant colonies. Neighborhoods near the canals and properties with sprinkler systems that run frequently tend to see the heaviest ant activity.
New construction across South and West Meridian has disturbed massive amounts of soil over the past decade. When developers grade land and build homes, ant colonies that were spread across open fields get displaced and pushed toward finished homes and landscaping. That’s why newer subdivisions often deal with worse ant problems than older, more established areas.
And then there’s the seasonal cycle. Meridian’s warm, dry summers drive ants indoors looking for water. Our busiest months for ant calls are May through August, but we start seeing activity as early as March when soil temperatures rise and colonies start foraging again.

For carpenter ants, we locate the nest and apply targeted treatments directly, plus address any moisture conditions that attracted them in the first place. For pavement ants, we treat nesting sites along foundations and hardscaping with residual products that provide lasting protection.
